Week 4
This was the week I was both excited and scared about.
Painting is something that I have done all throughout primary school, college and also in my spare time. However at this point, it had been a year since the last time I painted and I was nervous about not being able to paint to the same standard as I used to.
As I began painting, I was taking it all really slowly. When you paint you have to consider your next three steps beside there is limited time to manipulate it before it dries. You also have to be ready in case it doesn't turn out how you expected it, and then you have to quickly adapt to overcome and fix the changes.
The first leaf I painted was the top one in the third picture above, it also took the longest and set the style/tone for the whole piece. I think it ended up having about five layers on it because I was changing the colours and designs on the leaf to get it to match the vision in my head.
I started of painting the leaf a solid colour, which acts as the base undertone for the leaf. Then I started to play around with the light and dark values of that green undertone thus creating the kind of splotchy colouring that I originally did not intend to do, but quite liked how it turned out in the end.
I then played with the bright minty coloured lining on the leafs. My original plan for the painting was try to make it realistic as possible in a style I create, however, I tried it and didn't like it, it just looked dull. So instead I made the lining really bright which I think looks perfect. It creates a vibrant colour pop and makes the leaves branch out of the page.
I then carried on to the second leaf, which took about half the time once I got my routine for painting it set. The last leaf took about 20 minutes roughly if I can remember.
I think overall, I was really really happy with how these leaves turned out because before I began, I only saw this as a risk. This would make or break the painting depending on how it would turn out.
All I needed to do now was keep the momentum going...
