PROJECT PROPOSAL

GOAL

One of the things that I've always wanted to be great at, but always struggled with is drawing. Well more specifically, drawing people. I don't know why but I always seem to mess it up; the proportions are always off, nothing is ever symmetrical, and overall I was never happy with how the final design or style of the art piece turned out. Over the years I've tried to incorporate drawing and adding people into my paintings or sketches, but it's still been a huge hurdle to overcome.

However, last year I decided that if i wanted to improve my drawing/painting abilities, I would have to work on my biggest weakness. So for my iReflect project I am going to complete a painting that incorporates 2 different elements; A person (which is the challenging element for me) and flora surrounding them (which is an element I find easier to paint).

METHOD

For my method I am going to work on the painting throughout the weeks, however because I work and study full-time, I am limited to my only day off (Monday). So my main struggle might be to make sure I'm spending a decent amount of time each week, however, I have made a plan below to follow:

RESOURCES & REFERENCES

Most of my resources will be me just experimenting on my own to see what works and what doesn't. However I will be looking at artist models to help myself vision what I'm going to be painting but also to keep by my side as a guideline in case I need help. The main artists I am using for inspiration is photographer Bella Kotak, as her photography is similar to the vision that I'm trying to create, although her pictures are a lot more fantasy themed, it is only a starting point to guide me. Jacquelin de Leon is also another major inspiration to me, as another goal of mine is create my own style. She has inspired me because whenever I see her artwork, I immediately know it's her work,  and someday I want people to look at my artwork and think, "Ooh, that's Anthony's artwork! I know because he has a distinct style!"

REFLECTION

To meet the reflection criteria I am going to challenge myself through a few questions to think about while progressing through this project:

And furthermore, I have also come up with a few questions to think about after each section of the painting is done to reflect on, and give myself feedback and self-criticism:

Well, it's time to get started!

WEEK 1: FOUNDATION
This week I will focus on the concept of my painting. I will plan what will go into my painting, which elements will be centered on and I will decide what mediums i will use to paint with, as well as the materials and style.

WEEK 2: DIGITAL

This week I will reflect on the process of drawing the person, including the stages going through to get that done (digital drawing) and the equipment used to carry out the process (Wacom Tablet & Photoshop).

WEEK 3: SKELETON

This week I am going to be using my digital drawing as a skeleton for drawing the base layer onto my selected choice and size of canvas.

WEEK 4: RISK

This week is the beginning of painting. I plan to warm up as I haven't painted in a long time, so I will be starting out with a few leaves to work out, which will develop the style of the painting.

WEEK 5: NATIVE

As I'm slowing getting back into the painting process, I am also going to take this week slowly and only paint and talk about the Koru and the meaning behind it.

WEEK 6: FLORA

This week is going to be hectic, I'm going to try finish all the Flora & flowers surrounding the girl in the painting following the style I've developed into.

WEEK 7: CONNECTED

This is the week I've been working up to and will probably be the most difficult. I am going to paint the girl, focusing on the skin base layers and working up from them.

WEEK 8: AURA

This week I will be focusing on the finishing touches, and also the background (whether I will be blacking it out or leaving it white), and I will also reflect and talk about future art and how this painting will help me develop more art in the future.

  • Am I painting the way I intended to?

  • Is everything going to plan? If not, why?

  • If something has gone wrong, how did I overcome that barrier?

  • Have I made any changes that affect the overall vision of the art?

  • After a day of finishing an element of the painting, am I still satisfied with this result?

  • If I'm still not happy with it, how am I going to deal with it?
